You know,… That plastic film stuff is mainly held in place by static & surface tension. If you remove it carefully, you can get it off cleanly in one intact piece. So, if someone really liked the tint it gave their picture, they could always remove the film from one T.V., and apply it to the new one! John

Response:

Or an oil based varnish. BTW, back on topic, I bought a new Takamine about a month ago and the day the return policy expired, I took of the pick guard plastic.  The pick guard looked dull, cloudy, and basically like crap and I was very disappointed.  I played it for a few days and started looking at it closer.  Ha! It had TWO pick guard covers.  I ripped the second one off and it was smooth as glass. A black mirror.  I’m very happy now.  I feel like I dodged an idiot bullet.

That reminds me, I went to a friends house some time ago, and they had a black and white tv that still had the tinted screen guard on it.  They had the brightness turned all the way up.  The tv must have been 15 years old. They always wondered why it had such a dim picture. tim

Hi Alex. Get rid of it! If you leave it on too long it may fuse itself to the plastic pickguard. Cheers, Rick :) > There seems to be a transparent film that’s covering my pick guard. > Recently, it began to peel at the edges. Is it safe to remove it, or should > I just leave it and deal with it?

Hmmm,… But, they didn’t have any scratches on the tube surface, right? JLF

Response:

There seems to be a transparent film that’s covering my pick guard. Recently, it began to peel at the edges. Is it safe to remove it, or should I just leave it and deal with it?

Response:

It’s just plastic film that they put on at the factory so the pick guard doesn’t get scratched. You can pull it off. — Cathy Visit my website at http://www.cathycowette.com

Yup.  Expect it to be a hassle where it wraps around the switches and knobs (if it’s an electric guitar).  Take your time to avoid scratching the pickguard if you have to grab little shreds of it with tweezers.  If it’s an acoustic pickguard, just zip it off.
