For a Ten year old, can or should you rent a samller scale instrument from a music store? The strings buxx on the neck on the one I bought. The amp was OK but seems to have changed. I bought a set a few years ago and only included the amp (decent). gig bag (crap) and cord (worse than crap). You’d be better off seeing the guitar you will buy and making sure it is OK. There are tons of these packages (Fender, Yamaha, Epiphone, Ibanez etc.) at Guitar Center and Sam Ash. Best Buy is no cheaper. — The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Well, I’ve gotten into a few tiffs with guys on this NG who recommend that beginners spend hundreds of dollars on their first gear. Personally I think that today is a great time for a beginner because whenever I walk into my local Sam Ash or Guitar Center, I’m astounded at the quality of the guitars that sell for under $150. Are they MIA Fender quality? Of course not. And they don’t sound nearly as good either. But they’re damn fine playing guitars usually, and are the perfect thing for a beginner that, chances are, will quit within a mont regardless of whether they have the $99 guitar or the $999 one. I say go with the Yamaha, though I bet you could get it even cheaper if you bought it online.

Looking over previous posts I get the impression these cheapo package guitars are not well received. However, this is for a 10yr old which may not stick with it so my goal is to find something: – inexpensive (little investment) – enough quality that it won’t turn them off to playing – frets won’t cut fingers. – buzzing from cheap amp not too distracting Yamaha EG112CF package is only $180 US at Best Buy. Great price!!! Alternative is a Squire Affinity Strat (not Bullet which is lower quality right?) + Fender 15G amp, for $230. I figure I can get a cheap bag/tuner/string winder from the dealer for a little extra, so figure another $30 for a total of $260. That $180 price on the Yamaha is very attractive, if she doesn’t stick with it, heck I’ll bang on it for a while to get my $180 bucks worth. Any thoughts? Thanks, John K.

I got one of theYamaha paks for my son(16) and I am quite surprised at the quality of the guitar for the price. I looked at the Fenders also, but felt there was more "bang for the buck" with the Yamaha. Sadly, he still messes with my stuff, maybe I’ll just start calling the Yamaha mine, hahaha. This was at Sam’s club; the packages may be different through other places. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Looking over previous posts I get the > impression these cheapo package guitars > are not well received.
