I say just go with the electric unless YOU want to play acoustic . It sounds like you dont.   If you are determined to stay below $330 – a Mexican Fender Strat price, you might still find one for $299 I suppose somewhere but I noticed prices were going up online – check out the sub $250 guitars by getting a Musicians Friend Catalog FREE online signup.   They have a lot of Ibanezes and other makes from $100 to $250. Another source is www.MusicYo.com  go for the $180 and up models. The ones below that are made from heavily laminated wood.  Im talking about the Strikers.   The other thing many do is replace the PUs on them.  Try www.Billlawrence.com  $40 for a various single coils and $48 for a humbucker. I like the single coil sound and many guitars like the strat style can incorporate single coils and humbuckers – eg. FAT STRAT to get both sounds. If you dont want both and like the Humbucker sound get a Ibanez or Striker model etc. IF you want the strat sound – Id recommend spending a bit mor and getting the Mexican  Made strat and later swapping the PUs out, though the whole thing would cost more than you planned. Instead of making an amp which I really doubt would same you money, I would just get the cheap Marshall 15 watt for $129 .   THe Behringer 30 watt amp with effects built in seems to be a bargain at $169 too. And if you have your heart set on a tube amp – Ive been combing the web for one. Most tubes below $400-500 get really mixed reviews including the Fenders but the Fenders are pretty much the standard recomendation at around $400 which is kind of pricey.  THe Laney tube 15 watt Ive seen as low as $300 which some have praised. The sub $300 tube? Ive only seen mixed reviews on various "tube" amps – I passed this one up after reading some bad reviews and some good reviews on it but then went back to it as a possible option after seeing it sold at more places now.  $199 40 watt PIGNOSE GV40  ZZOUNDS and Musiciansfriend.com. Reviews at Harmony central – kind of mixed. Some good . Some bad. I havent tried this amp yet.

I know this subject has been done to death on this group but I need some last minute guidance. I am about to purchase a first guitar with a plan to learn a blues style and eventually head towards an electric blues sound (Alman etc) What would life be without a dream. My playing will be purely for personal pleasure and stress relief. With my budget and keeping in mind that this phase may pass over in a year or so I was going to purchase an electric at about US$250 and build a practice amp myself ( electronics engineering is my real occupation).  I am still researching the pros and cons of humbuckers / single coils and various combinations with a lot of help from this group. As part of this quest today I was talking to salesman who was trying to talk me into a cutaway acoustic with pickup. He seemed to make sense saying that my learning and practice could just as easily be done on this accoustic and later I could add the amp if I wanted to go electric. Of course my research has to start all over again. It seems that the guitar he offered me ( in my price range) did not have a solid sound board and from what I have read the price of a good pick up subtracted from the overall price must result in some compromise in guitar construction. (sorry I did not get the brand name). Therefore I have decided to go acoustic (without the pick up) and the guitar which seems to come out top in my budget is the Fender DG 14S. Unfotunately it is not a cut away. Will this be problem learning blues style music. It seems that most guitarists end up with more than one guitar and when I reach the "electric" stage will either trade up or purchase a second instrument. Is this logic OK. this also gives me a chance to thank all those experts who have assisted me while lurking on this group. Peter
