Beginner Guitar

Question:

I just bought a cherrywood colored "Galveston " accoustic guitar about a month ago at a pawn shop for $93.  My friends that play guitar all say it has awesome sound.  Look around and see if you can find that brand.  I’d be interested in hearing what you think of it.  8) peace, Tiny

I’d check out Seagulls they are very nice and low priced, I found my M-6 on ebay for 400$ brand new with a hardshell.

I think if you have the money buy the Martin, more bang for your buck to start with and something you can sell easily if and when you decide to move up to a more expensive instrument. Lets face it you can tell the difference so why not get the guitar that you really want now. My 2 cents                       Gregor Martin – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Martin is the best in his opinion, but not in mine and many others.  Try Taylor, Larrivee (my favorite), Martin, Seagull, etc., and see which one you like.  There is no such thing as the best.  It’s what sound and feels good to you.  All of the manufactures I named make fine instruments and all have a decent resell as well if you decide not to keep it.

My apology Paul, my server must have missed the first part of the thread. And, in that case, you are correct sir. :-) Sorry, Jack

I can see a couple of opposing aspects to this question: The DM is fairly classy for a beginner – if you change your mind and want to sell, you will lose comparatively more than on a cheapo. You may learn better on a guitar you really like eg the DM. Maybe a good compromise is to look for a used DM, then if you want to sell you won’t lose much money.  Most of my favourite guitars in the low-mid price range have been Martins – "1", "DM", "15" and "16" series. They aren’t always the loudest or flashiest sounding, but the tone grows on you, and they should all improve with age. They do show a bit of variation between individual guitars though. Whatever you buy *get a good setup job done* – nothing is more discouraging for a new acoustic player, IMO,  than poor setup, especially if you have been used to an electric. Tony D

Well, since you already know that the Martin sounds and feels better, buy the Martin.  You will eventually buy it anyway.  This way, you wont suffer any financial loss in buying and then selling the Takamine.  The Martin will last a lifetime.  You wont be frustrated at the limitations of the guitar because it doesn’t have any.  If you do decide to quit, you will get a decent price for your Martin.  If you want to learn, the Martin will even make it a bit easier to learn.

I am not a big fan of either one of those brands, BUT the most important thing is to remember that you need to start with something you are comfortable with. I have had some students that bought a Martin as a first guitar and was very happy with it.(I don’t give guitar lessons, but have for some friends.) I also know accomplished players who swear by them. It really depends on what you like. Everyone is different. You get what you pay for is certainly true as well. I am not saying go out and spend $1000 on your first guitar, but if the price difference was a couple of hundred dollars and I was more comfortable with the Martin, I would buy it. I notice your email addy is Flashnet. Are you from DFW? If you want to email me I would be willing to meet you down at Mars, Guitar Center, or where ever to show you some things to look for when you are buying a guitar, no matter what the brand is. I think that if you can already tell the difference, go for the martin (assuming it is affordable). I think an even better thing to do would be to rent (or borrow from a friend) a guitar for about 2 weeks to see if you are honestly willing to play.  Many people buy great instruments, then never pick them up. If you have at least 2 weeks (feel free to make it longer) experience, and love it, 2 things will happen. 1-you will have more knowledge of guitars and be able to notice new things about each guitar that you might have glossed over 2-It will be easier to justify the cost of the more expensive instrument to yourself, as well as to anyone who might poop on the idea (wife, girlfriend, parents, etc). You could even talk with the store and maybe see if they would take the cost of renting a guitar off of the price of buying a new one (so if it costs you a total of $30 for the rental, see if they will knock an extra $30 of the cost of the guitar). — mike anderson http://www.mp3.com/mikeanderson <–Oodles of new demos now available!!! my guitar lessons–> http://us.geocities.com/flabellifoliate No one wants to know the truth about their heroes.

Let me say, that for a first guitar, i really recommend against online buying. Also, i was in mars the other day, went into the ‘nice’ room to play on some of their guitars.  Pulled a couple gibsons down, they played worse than my acoustic (which is in need of a neck re-set), not impressed with their martins either, though they sounded pretty good. — mike anderson http://www.mp3.com/mikeanderson <–Oodles of new demos now available!!! my guitar lessons–> http://us.geocities.com/flabellifoliate No one wants to know the truth about their heroes.

I would like to start learning to play an acoustic guitar. I would like some opinions on the right instrument to start with.  I am trying to decide whether to purchase a new Tokamine GS330 or a Martin DM.  The DM is about twice as expensive as the GS330.  I like the feel of both instruments with the DM the better of the two.  I like the sound of both with the DM again the better.  I just am not able to decide if the added cost of the Martin will be beneficial.  Should I buy the Tokamine to start with and later upgrade to a Martin?   Help!!  What do you all think. I was facing the situation you are in right now, a month ago. If you want to get a new guitar, goto http://www.marsmusic.com they have some really incredible deals, will save you a bundle. I was looking at Washburn’s there, but they also have Takamine and Martin Sigma’s. Look around on eBay you might find a very good used guitar at a decent price. Checkout seller gman.music on eBay, he gets brand new guitars with minor defects directly from the Washburn factory and sells them cheap, some of them with warranty. I recently got myself a brand new Washburn D33S on eBay the list price on it was $1200, i got it for $450. At marsmusic the same guitar is priced at $500. I would suggest you look for a used guitar in your price range rather than a new one (unless you get a really cool deal). What I mean to say is you can probably get a used Martin DM for the same price as a new Takamine GS330. Good luck with your search. – Vamsi
