Where to find people to jam with?

Question:

> Same questions: > Are there beginner-intermediate guitarists in the SF Bay Area willing to

meat and jam together? > I think jamming with real people is essensial after a certain experience with the guitar. > Stanjo

It depends on the type of music you’re interested in.  One place might be McGrath’s pub in Alameda.  He has different jams the on different nights (one bluegrass, one irish) but I don’t know the skill level.

I found musicians at my church to jam with and to teach me. We started out jamming together and now regularly play for services and at various rest homes, other churches, etc.    My area also has several bluegrass and traditional music enthusiasts who get together on a regular basis and jam and who welcome new players of all levels — including rank beginners. You might also try spending $10 or so to put an ad in your local newspaper, "Penny Press," "Horse Trader," or whatever the local freebie advertising tabloid is called.

The best bet to find someone in your local area is to ask at the local music stores, sometimes they have a bulletin board where you can post a note. You can also try putting a message up here with your location and see if we have any NG members who are near you and interested.                                         Eric

You know, you’ve got a really interesting question. Around my area there’s so many jams going on that there’s no way in hell one guy could keep up with ‘em all. But you’re absolutely right on about needing to get with other pickers if you really want to develop as a player. Dunno what I’d do if I were at a loss for someone to jam with. What about running an ad in the local paper? What about checking the local music stores? Ask the sale’s people there. Some of ‘em have a bulletin board where people can post messages. Once you find one jam you can probably "network" from there and find several more going on. They’re out there once you get your foot in the door. Next thing would be to find the jam that has the atmosphere that best suits your musical tastes and is compatible with your talent level. Some of the jams are really ragged as far as the level of music being played … some of ‘em have some pretty good pickers for a bunch of hasbeens. Some of the jams I go to are organized in such a way that if you want to sing or play, you sign in on a sheet and they just go down the list and take everyone in turn the way they’re signed in. Some of the jams I go to are pretty much a "closed circle" type of thing .. it’s more like one group of pickers that are running the show and if they want to ask you up, they’ll ask. Otherwise, you sit and listen. If they do ask you up and like what they hear, they’ll likely ask you up the next time. If they don’t care for what they hear, the next time, you’ll sit.

could always post an ad in the harmony-central.com classifieds.  If you are anywhere near a fairly large city you will probably get some responses. — mike anderson http://www.mp3.com/mikeanderson No one wants to know the truth about their heroes. Hurricanes Suck

I got in touch with a local musician friend who plays the kind of music I liked.  I told him I wasn’t looking to jam with him (he’s way to advanced for me), but wanted to find some beginners to jam with.  He gave me a lead that has been very nice:  a group that meets once a week in an old building on a farm.  There are a variety of instruments and lots of different ability levels, and everyone is very tolerant of mistakes if you are sincerely trying to do your best. You might also ask at your local music store. Jim Wayne
