Jason, The latter recommendation is not a bad one.If you want to order from Carvin, they do have a guitar "kit" that you can order. It’s Carvin’s "Bolt" model which is their version of a Stratocaster. You can get a kit with a fixed bridge for $339.99, or a kit with a Wilkinson tremolo for $379.99 In the kit, you get chrome hardware, a white multi-layered pickguard, and 3 Carvin "AP11" single-coil pickups. They also include a set of Carvin 9-42 strings, and a combination phillips head screwdriver/truss rod wrench. You might want to get different strings, as I’ve heard Carvin strings don’t last long at all. If I understand the catalog listing correctly, you have a few options that you can upgrade as well: *Swamp Ash body $60 *Twinblade humbuckers $20 (like an SD Hot Rails, apparently) *Humbucking bridge pickup $20 *White pearloid pickguard $20 *Black pearloid pickguard $20 *Red tortoise pickguard $20 *Black chrome hardware $20 *Gold hardware $40 *Sperzel tuners $30 I have never personally ordered from Carvin, but I have a close friend who’s gotten 2 guitars from them, and is waiting on a third. Their customer service is usually top-notch, and their guitars are stellar in quality, or so says Harmony Central and my friend. If you’re curious, you might also want to check Carvin’s website. www.carvin.com Let us know how things turn out… william

Congrats on the decision. Good luck. Be patient. I like the versatility of the fat strat having > a humbucker but I love the look of the Les Paul and the great crunch they > have. Which would you reccomend for most any type of music?

either one. *s* Would Squier Fat > Strat be O.K.?

I dunno. You can get the non squier Fender Fat strat with floyd rose for 450.00.. you can get the standard trem fat strat Fender for less. for the money you mentioned.. either would beat the squier. Is there another guitar I should consider? My problem with your post is this: the two guitars you’ve chosen are both ‘classic’ types.. and very different. single coils are problematic noise wise.. and not very loud. Humbucks don’t have the single coil treble, bite, but they have a smoothness and a crunch all their own. the Fender has a different scale.. different sound, different feel. For a beginner, I think gibsons scale is much better, being shorter. One of the guitars has a whamy.. the epi doesn’t. You have to decide what sound, what scale and if you need a whammy. As a beginner > should I even be considering these guitars?

I think you ought to buy a Carvin Bolt strat kit.. you’ll have less cash outlay, better woods, better workmanship, and everything a strat would have.. plus the fun and learning of assembly. *s* just a thought. Thanks in advance, hmm. that means my ‘your welcome’ is belated. What are you some kinda smart aleck? Twang! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> — > Jason Darkis > The Nerd Boy

Nay nay nay the humbucks are also smooth, and have been used on some of the most famous blues and rock recordings ever made.. more than the strat, possibly. The strat will give you some nice sounds, with the humbucking bridge pickup. ..which is what you’d get out of the epi.. only a different sound because of the different scale, design, woods, etc.  Ultimately i figured the fat strat is more versatile. Is > this a correct assumption?

I dont’ think so. If you look at what they’ve been used for, and how they sounded.. it’s really close, you know? a strat with a humbuck AND a tremolo is more versatile than the epi would be, just because of the trem. Is that a must have, for you? Also, are Squiers acceptable or would you > reccomend I just splurge and go for the mexican strat?

You said 5 6 hundred us.. since the standard fat strat and fat strat with floyd rose are both under five hundred… why get a squier? Twang!  Two "TOTALLY" different guitars.  What are you using it for?  I’m considering a Les Paul, and I really like the "real deal" Gibson, but there is no way in hell I can justify or afford $2000-$3000 for my playing skill level.  I have a Mexican Fat Strat, I like it (I highly recommend it). It does have a few limitations.  I don’t like the way the little bridge height adjustment screws stick up from the bridge saddles. I think this is hindering the way I mute with the side of my hand. This could be fixed with a set of Graph-tech bridge saddles.  I skipped the Floyd Rose on the advice of this group, I think I should have gotten it now (sorry guys). The other thing I don’t like is the smaller frets on this guitar. They are acceptable, but I like the larger frets. Twip

Hey man, thanks for the reply. If its of help, ill be using it for a bit of everything including blues, classic rock and heavy distortion type stuff.
