LOL Sure, it is no real tube amp, just a cheap digital simulation. But for me in my little room, with my little 15W amp it is nice to get some kind of vintage british rock guitar sound. Ofcourse it would be nicer to play in front of a Marshall Wall Of Death… Bernard — www.piller.at

You’re FAR too hardcore on people with limited budgets in my opinion Scrofula… I’ll never speak ill of a purist, I’m one myself when it comes to a lot of things, but many people can’t afford a perfect combo, let alone a perfect head and cab… Most of those in alt.guitar.BEGINNER aren’t gonna play for 10,000 people tomorrow, so they have to go with what’s available, which sometimes includes what they think sounds good at the time. Their tastes and knowledge may go beyond where they’re at now, but if something they buy makes them want to keep playing, even if it’s by making them "think" it’s better, nothing is lost. They’re gonna keep playing, and with time, they may learn what a tube amp is and what it’s not. Let them decide, don’t tell them their choice is automatically garbage ’cause it can’t do what $1,000+ will get you.

Hey, have at’em. They’re okay as headphone amps. I think the FX sound awful through a real amp. I’m not a huge FX fan in general, and think way too many beginners start wanting to play with FX, but that’s my opinion. Little boxes like the Zoom and the Pandoras have their place, but when folks start talking about playing with them in a band or other setting besides just practice wanking I think they’re making a mistake. I got a Pandora PX2 early on, and through headphones at home it was a way to listen and vary the usual practice stuff (listen, it’s Jimi doing scales!). I’ve heard a number of folks playing out with cheap FX through crappy solid state guiar amps….and it invariably sounds awful. For beginners, I think a cheap FX unit is a way to have fun with the rote learning practice material, but it seems like way too many people get FX dependent in some pretty horrendous ways.

Once again: They are good IF you take the time to program them. It takes TIME and EFFORT. If you are looking to saturate your sound with effects, they do indeed suck. If you are looking for a little reverb, chorus, compression and limiting, they are just fine. My opinion: the auto wah, cry, step, phase shift do not sound very good. Again, they are great for enhancement, not saturation. Dan

Whoever is running a guitar through a hifi amp is not clear in his head. That’s what guitar amps are for. They are made for the frequency band of a guitar. When you play your guitar through a guitar amp you will have to turn the thing up to some volume. Playing on whispering room level will always give you a shitty sound. If you want to play quietly, use the effects box with headphones. Actually, the 505 has very good tube simulation, delay, chorus, etc. but it can get quite noisy. Sure, the distortion modules can sound a bit weak. But if you program patches yourself, you can get some amazing effects. I’m not really sure why. I never said it was great through headphones, but it is okay. I suspect that the digital processing produces sounds/effcts that psychoacousitcally work best in a sealed and controlled environment…looking at the signal on a scope, playing through headphones, etc. What I can state from my experience is that these lower end FX units, like the Zoom and pandora, simply don’t sound good when run throough a guitar amp.

Something that doesn’t suck. Seriously, the guy did not list what he wanted to use it for , budget, price or anything. I recommend a late 50’s tele with a real tweed bassman. Happy now?

A 505II is about 65-70 bucks. They really don’t suck, if you know how to program it yourself. The factory settings suck indeed. Also, they are cumbersome when you want to do a quick switch of effects. You can’t get to , say, effect 6 from 1 without going past the 5 in between. They sound amazing thru a stereo amp, but that could be said about just about any stereo effect. If you but one , make SURE you get the manual.

Cheap is the only way to approach one of these POS. IT makes an okay headphone amp. Any other use is an insult to the ears of anyone listening. The II is pretty cheap, so the older one should be close to dirt.
