reading tabs

Question:

That is because your email program has word wrap.  To the poster and others who have not been posting here for long.  When or if you post a tab or chord diagram always send it with a fixed width fonts such as Courier. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi C&M. That looks like harpsichord TAB. A book or someone who has taken the time to learn the tune correctly will pretty much guarantee that it will be better than internet tab. I have *never* seen internet tab be correct. I’ve got students that bring in internet tab to tunes that they want to learn, and we invariably end up correcting it. The store bough book is much more likely to be right. The people who do internet tabs are almost always beginners. The guys who know how to transcribe well get paid to do it, and they’re not posting on the internet. Don’t ever rely on internet tab.

That’s a rough looking piece of tab alright.  Just to add to what Dave’s already said, slashes usually mean slides.  eg, —9/11— means slide from fret 9 to fret 11.  —19—– means slide down from fret 19 to wherever you feel like.  This guy doesn’t seem to have been terribly consistent regarding forward vs back slashes though.  —7/8/9/8—- doesn’t really make sense.  It ought to be —-7/8/98—-.  Not 100% Ross

Yea! internet tabs may be wrong, but they are fun to tinker around with and have kept me interested in playing. After 30 minutes of chord progressions, scales and that dreaded circle of 5ths…it is fun to look up a tab and pretend your a star.(while no one else is around of course) Come to think of it……would your friends be anymore correct? Or even a store bought book? Unless of course the actual artist wrote the tab themself. Even then I am sure anyone who plays a song always adds or takes things away while performing depending on how they are feeling at the time. So can a tab really be correct? A beginner

Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time on the garbage tabs from the internet.  Go to a store and buy a book or beg your friends to teach you if you’re that cheap.  You’ll be much happier in the long run.  Internet tabs are always wrong.

Hi Chris, Pick up a copy of Guitar World Acoustic magazine. Each edition has a pretty good explanation on how to read tab. Although many Internet tabs are incorrect, some of them may give you enough of an idea so you can work things out yourself. And, you probably don’t want to be an exact replica of your favorite guitar idol. You’ll want to experiment with things and add a little bit of yourself into your arrangements. The guy who posted that tab didn’t know what he was doing. Go to wholenote.com they have a very easy explanation of tabulature. Basically each line of a tab represents a string on the guitar E||— B||— G||— D||— A||— E||— The numbers on the strings represent where to fret. In the link you provided, looks to me like he did not seperate the group of six strings. So just put a few spaces inbetween every grouping of six strings. Or better yet search for better tab. Hope this helps a little Dave
