Word. I got my first ’serious’ guitar used, after playing a Gibson SG 61′ reissue, list price $2700. Got it for $500 used, becuase its probably only a vg condition, its been modified too but plays really nice and sounds like heaven.

No, but they’re HEAVY.  Start out playing one at 6′3", and by the time you get a record deal, you’ll be down to 5′4".      ;-D — "I’m not a Cobol programmer, although I’m often told I look like one" – Bob the Dinosaur, Dilbert John Sessoms So MANY guitars, so little money…     (SIGH!) God that brings back memories! first guitar ever was a Yamaha TGX 121 FP (yep, one of those Free Art jobs where you could stick your own scratchplate art onto it… cool… I ended up putting kitchen foil onto it, made it look a bit lit that Satriani bloke’s guitar, only ruffled). And yep, still rue the day I got rid of it…

A good Les Paul will play like a dream. The scale is shorter than a strat so it is easier to reach the notes.  You could get a decent Ephiphone Les paul for that price.  As always, i recommend Carvin as the ultimate all around electric guitar.

Sorry I’m jumping in this thread a little late. I got myself an Epiphone SG guitar about a year ago. I love it! it doesn’t seem too hard for a beginner…of course, i haven’t learned on any other guitar before. I have noticed that fenders seemed to be a little easier to play, because of the thinner neck…but i still liek teh Gibson sound better.

Les Pauls are _not_  hard to play.  They can be hard to afford, if you are looking at a Gibson.  Epiphone makes cheaper versions of the Les Paul, and I would recommoned those.  To be honest, just about any guitar with humbucking pickups  (the fat pickups)  will probably suit your needs, granted you have a good distortion device.  Also a Gibson or Epiphone SG would be a good choice.  There are Ibanez Guitars out there made with hard rock in mind, so you might want to check out those.  If you want to get crazy, there are Flying Vs and Explorers. >i’m willing to pay up to 500 dollars for an electric guitar right now. >gimme your advice and your opinions!!!

I don’t know if your amplifier has to come out of that 500 so: If it does: An Epiphone Les Paul or SG, as a part of a package or you can buy the amp separately. Any used guitar you like the look and sound of. If it doesn’t: Here’s your chance to get a kickass deal on a used guitar.  If you look hard, you can end up with a really good guitar.  Most stores will still supply a warrantee with a used instrument, so don’t worry about that. As a final word, don’t be a brand snob.  You can be perfectly happy with some brand you’ve never heard of, just make sure you try before you buy. CyberDave
