Guitar for a Beginner

Question:

> Guys, > I am almost an absolute beginner. > I could spend about $200-300. > Am really interested in learning Rock Guitar. > Firstly, is there a convention regarding the following, > if one should start with an Acoustic or an electric one. > Further is there a particular guitar brand/model that is very > popular with beginners ? > thanx > MG

for guitar recommendations look at the ones at top page of: http://guitar.about.com/ I’d look at something like Squier fat strat or even affinity strat. Or then Yamaha 112. But it all very much depends what you want to sound like and _what feels the best in your hands_. – Weelie

Response:

There are many guitars in the price range you are looking at. Try and go to a music store and hold and handle a few, finger around on the neck and don’t be so concerned what it looks like, if it feels good in your hands you will play better. Even in that price range, you will be surprised how some feel pretty good and some feel like crap. Try looking on eBay.  When you do finally buy, have it "set up"properly regardless where you buy .  Good Luck

Do you have a friend who plays?  Take them with you to the store.  You really want someone who knows what a good/bad guitar feels/sounds like. Gary F. http://www.gwfweb.com/guitars

Hey man, I’d go electric…but whatever floats your boat. Look into cheaper yamaha’s at your local shops. I tryed out a Pacifica 112 that you can pick up for $200 that sounded pretty good. It has a humbucker and two single coils. Also the Ibanez grx40 would make a good starter I think, in the same configuration. I couldn’t get my hands on one though. Mexi Strats are cool but for rock, you will want a humbucker. You could get a fat strat but I personally don’t think you need to spend that much. When I first started into guitar I thought I wanted something more expensive ie: mexi strat, epi les paul but my teach told me something worthwhile. He said only buy a good guitar when you are good enough to play it. That way if you decide to drop guitar you dont have $500+ tied up in gear you don’t use. You can always use the extra cash to get a better amp :) . Simply put, go electric, look at cheap Yamaha (Pacifica series) and Ibanez (GRX or RG series). These should be in your budget. With the left over money I’d try for a small marshall practice amp or a peavey blazer 158 (15w practice amp). Just some pointers I was given when I started. Good luck, — Jason Darkis The Nerd Boy
