Try this: http://www.guitarnoise.com/beginner/20030504.php David Hodge has a great series on beginner stuff, and Neil Young is a favorite of his. This lesson covers palm muting for "Heart of Gold", and it includes sound files (mp3) so you can hear what it sounds like.

Thanks for the advice, looks like I’ve got a load more practicing to do until I sound good.

Palm muting – not so easy to explain on the newsgroup but here goes – place the edge (pinky side) of your right hand against the strings near the bridge and strum with the pick between your thumb and first finger. If you press against the strings very tight there will be no sound. That effect is good for something like the Creedence Clearwater Revival song "Looking Out My Back Door" where you hear the whackachunka sound. Release pressure just a little so some tone is produced and you get the Neil Young/James Taylor mute effect. You can vary the pressure as you’re strumming. Like anything else with guitar it just takes practice.

If you are just looking for something to play that will increase your confidence and give you that spark to keep going, I would suggest going to: www.wholenote.com I say this a lot in this ng, but it is a good, free site with tab lessons with music to play along to…. All different styles of music are covered in their lessons….. Hang in there! Paula

Join a band. You will learn lots of stuff quickly. Joining a band will also give you more incentive.

Hi everyone, this is my first post to this group and I hope that someone can help as I am getting quite annoyed with my lack of progress for the past 2 years. I have a lovely Tanglewood acoustic that has just been re-setup and sounds absolutely lovely. However, in the shop the assistant gave me a quick demo and it sounded superb. I am aware that I’m not exactly brilliant, but even when I am very gentle and put a lot of effort into my playing, it still sounds flat and dull. He explained that I need to study something called "palm muting" I’ve looked this up and it only seems to apply to softening the strings when mucking around with power-chords. I would very much like to play in the Style of Neil Young (just to give you an idea) Any help would be most gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
