BEGINNER- SOME HELP PLEASE
Question:
Being a fellow Canuck I can tell you exactly how far $500 will go. If it were me I’d go get the classifieds, and check out pawn shops. You never know you might find an great buy, but if your really bent on a new guitar, I would have to agree with some of the other posts, go Ibanez, Yamaha, Epiphone, Fender, and of course you can’t forget, some of the High End Samicks are fine Instruments, and you can pick a good one up for around $500 ($312 US). I however must insist that you go used, you’ll get a better instrument for your money, just take somebody experienced with you when you go shopping for used gear. If your in southern New Brunswick I’ll go with you. Peter Fraser Saint John, NB

Check out Epiphone (by Gibson)… real decent copies of almost every Gibson model, but at affordable prices. OR Yamaha makes good quality electrics, I’ve been playing one for a few years and love it … stays in tune, sounds great, and won’t cost me a fortune to replace if/when I lose/break it.

Get an advice from an "advanced" beginner – I bought an Ibanez RG120 for under $200 US and it plays great. Action is low, neck is comfortable and fast. Adapters are so, so, but very decent for stock adapters. After an year and a half practicing I haven’t reached the limits of the guitar. It will last me for may years to come, I hope…. There is another Ibanez model, not much different, with a single-coil adapter in the middle. I don’t feel the lack of a single-coil adapter on my guitar and it sounds ok for blues, rock, metal, jazz. I recommend hunbuckers – find them more versatile for a beginner. Amp is another story. Go get a decent practice amp. I started with a Fender Frontman 15, tried a Crate FX15 (or similar) and was very disappointed. Finally settled on a Marshall MG-15CDR, but Marshall AVT20 might be better. Stanjo

You can go real cheap by starting out with a Fender Strat Pak. I bought one for my son for Christmas and spent $300 US. Washburn makes a number of entry level electric’s. Search ebay seller g.man.music. He sells mostly Washburn seconds and closeouts. Real good buys. I have a Washburn HB-35n and a Johnson mandolin form him. My brother bought an acoustic Washburn. Not one complaint and we saved hundreds of dollars by getting a second or demo model. I don’t think you will find a Gibson in any playable shape for the $500 you have. Maybe one of the Epiphone models will fit in there. Ibanez makes a number of models in your price range. I would suggest searching the web and local guitar shops to find out what you want and then check ebay. Not all of the stuff there is used. I got my HB-35n new (not a second) with hardcase for $470. That includes shipping to my house. The suggested retail was $1300. I also bought a Marshall AVT20 practice amp off ebay for $127.50. It retails for $300. Once you decide what you want, watch ebay and save some money so you can buy the toys you will want. You know, the stomp boxes, cappo, fancy leather strap with you name in diamonds. Important Stuff like that. RF

Also, aside from the guitar itself, what gear should I get. I play (or want to play) rock and roll (light and hard), and metal, and some mainstream. What gear should I get?

I’m not sure exactly what $500 Can translates to in US dollars, but if the exchange is what I think it is (as in less than $500 in the US), you can pretty much rule out Gibson, unless you find a KILLER deal on something used. The Ibanez would be a decent choice, as would an Epiphone or Yamaha, but I wouldn’t scoff at a Mex. Fender, if you can afford it… the Mex. Fenders are GREAT guitars… Just make sure, since you’re gonna play metal, that the guitar you get has at least one humbucker.
