upgrading a guitar
Question:
Thanx for replying. I think I’ll buy that guitar in the end, since your comments were all positive…Squier is out of the question, I don’t like their looks (just a matter of taste, but 99% of Telecasters look ugly to me…), I tried to find an Epi, but the store had only Goth SG and LP to offer, and at Ibanez store, I found this GAX70 model…the AX models (which, as I understand it, would be an upgrade from GAX) are not available at the moment. Anyway, thanx once again:-) Nova reply to

Too many novice players try to upgrade the sound of their guitars by purchasing expensive pickups and ignore the most important part of an electric guitar’s sound … the amplifier! Between 60 and 75% of your tone comes from the amp. If you take a $300 guitar and add $150 worth of pickups to it … you’re not gonna get your money out of it. Get a good all tube amp and you’ve got something to keep after you get a better guitar.

I get your point. But those are 2 separate problems for me right now, cause I’ll get an amp as a present, and I have to pay for the guitar myself. And "my funds can’t cover my taste", so I’m employing all my creativity to find a solution. Thanx, though, this seems like a good advice. Nova *reply to:

IMHO it’s a bad idea to buy a guitar with the intention of upgrading it. If you want an upgrade from that guitar then buy one. That being said, the GAX70 is a fine guitar that shouldn’t require any upgrading.

Not exactly what most people would call cheapos, but if you get a Squier or Epi, and you want to upgrade you’ll have their Fender and Gibson cousins as models. Eric

I don’t find it a bad choice at all…I love playing mine…stock. As to its suitability for blues, that depends largely on what you’re playing through and what you can do. Play it through a Fender Twin Reverb and you’ve got it made. Having said that, you should know that it will never have the same Mojo as an ES-335 or similar Blues box. Mine is set up pretty low…0.5mm at the nut (~ 1/32), 1.5mm at the 12th (~3/32)…a tad higher at the Bass side…1/64 or so. I could go a bit lower at the twelf without buzzing, but not much. Very comfortable with .010-.042. It’s a nice player. Cheers, CS — — The opinions, comments, and advice offered by me, are mine alone. As such, they carry as much weight as a feather in a snow storm.
