FWIW, I’m pretty fond of my Marshall AVT 20.

Great inexpensive tubes amps are Fender Pro Junior or Blues Jr. Both are plenty loud enough and have good tone for the $s. — John 14:21 "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. What about the Blues Jr. model from Fender? Or for less money, the Frontman series? Anyone have any experiences with these amps?

I suggest going to as many music stores as you can and trying some out. If you’re embarrassed to play in public, bring a more experienced friend or ask a staff member to play ("so you can try various settings"). Try to get your demonstrator to play music that you like, though, and use a guitar that’s most like yours. WARNING: an amp that sounds really really great in the hands of an experienced player will probably not sound as good when you first start using it–there’s a remarkable amount of tone that resides in a player’s hands. As you improve, the quality of sound you can get will also increase (up to a point–you’ll know when you get there). General rules for amps: Solid state are less expensive and less heavy. Many people prefer tube amps for their sound, but it’s up to you to decide. The bigger the speaker, the fuller the sound. I’d steer clear of anything less than 10 inches if at all possible. You don’t really need more than 30 watts for most applications, and if you’re looking for a practice amp, 15 should do ya. Note: 15 and 30 watts in a tube amp is way louder than the same in a solid state amp. A good distortion sound in an amp (also often called "gain", "hi-gain" or "overdrive" or some variation thereon) is nice, but a good clean sound is more valuable. You can get an effects pedal to make a nice distortion, but there’s no pedal that’ll make your amp sound clean. Reverb is a really nice feature, but not critical. On small amps, reverb often sounds like crap anyway. More EQ knobs = more control over tone (typically bass, mid and treble are available). If you have too many knobs, though, you can get confused. Keep your budget in line with your expectations. If you only want a practice amp to use in your room by yourself, you can probably get away fairly cheaply. If you intend to play out or with a group that has a drummer, be prepared to spend more money. A cheap but perfectly reasonable amp can be had for $150-200 or so. Peavey, Crate and even Fender make some good small solid-state practice amps. The next range of amp quality used to start around $400–at this point Marshall has a number of good ones, Fender does too. This range is great for a beginner who aspires to playing with others. It’s not really up to big gigs, but it’s close. You can also find some decent tube amps in this range. The next jump is into pro-range gear, and you should expect to spend anything over $600, and the market’s crammed with very good gear in this price range. Now these prices may vary depending on where you live, and the brands available will certainly vary. The most important thing is, if you don’t know the amp already, you MUST hear it. If it sounds good enough to you that the price seems reasonable, go for it.
